Horse weight estimate

Heart girth squared × body length ÷ 330 gives an approximate weight in pounds when measurements are in inches. Use it for records and a professional nutrition discussion, never medication dosing.

Enter both measurements in inches.

How do I measure consistently?

Use a flexible plastic tape and a calm horse standing square, with a capable handler. Measure heart girth around the horse at the highest part of the withers. Measure body length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock. Keep measurement technique and time of day consistent. Do not put yourself in an unsafe position.

How accurate is the estimate?

A scale is more accurate. Breed and conformation affect formulas; pregnancy and extreme conformation can make this formula less useful. Ohio State notes that weight tapes often read lighter than a scale, with individual variation. Discuss changes with your veterinarian or qualified nutritionist. Do not calculate a drug dose from this result.
